Course description

This is a 3hr workshop giving opportunity for staff to practice the following techniques to get a person off the floor:

• independently with verbal prompting
• with a raising aid (Mangar Elk)
• with a passive hoist

It is aimed at Local Back Care Links to enable them to observe and competency staff practice.

It is also aimed at staff who are struggling to practise safeley and require more in depth training

Training objectives

What can I expect?
The aim of the course is to equip staff with a high level of knowledge and experience to be able to undertake this handling task safely. Delegates will:

  • Practice the techniques they were taught during basic training

  • Have their practice analysed in relation to the observation tool and the competency assessment forms

  • Reflecting on past experience, risk assess any complex handling scenarios to identify strategies that may have reduced risk

Learning outcomes

By the end of the session you will have:

  • Recalled the acronym used to undertake a manual handling risk assessment (TILE/LITE)

  • Applied this to any complex handling scenarios you have experienced

  • Recalled the 5 biomechanical principles of handling

  • Been observed doing all handling techniques that you use in your workplace to achieve the task of getting a person off the floor

Please note, considering the practical element of the course, low-heeled shoes that support all of the foot and no tight clothing should be worn.
Managers should ensure that the staff they nominate are in a state of physical fitness commensurate with being able to undertake the practical elements of this course safely. If in doubt when nominating an individual or needing clarification about the state of physical fitness required undertaking the course safely, please discuss with the People Handling and Back Care Advisor prior to the course.
